Trump Pump: Price of Used Bolt EV Increases 16% in Two Weeks

By Paul Gipe

Trump’s attack on Iran and the closure of the Straits of Hormuz has—as expected—increased the demand for EVs. Call it the “Trump Pump.”

We sold our 2020 Bolt EV to Cavana (see The Bolt’s Gone–Long Live the Chevy Bolt) for $10,400. We replaced it with the new 2027 Bolt (see 2027 Chevy Bolt Owner Initial Impressions). CarMax wants our Bolt—bad. They just upped their bid 16%. They are two weeks too late and several thousand dollars too short.

CarMax originally bid $7,200 for our 2020 Bolt with 55,000 miles on the odometer, but with only 33,000 miles on a new battery. That new battery has a new 8-year, 100,000 mile warranty too. I suspect their algorithms couldn’t factor that in. Kelley Blue Book bid $8,200 through the local Ford dealer. Carvana maybe knew something the others didn’t.

Today CarMax sent me a revised bid for $8,600, a 16% increase in their original offer. The only thing that has changed since their original offer is Trump’s war of choice in the Persian Gulf.

That’s another reason we drive electric. No wars for oil.
