We’ve made great strides in moving the electricity sector toward renewable energy. However, transportation remains a major source of air pollution and global warming gases. If we are to make a transition to renewable energy, we will need to electrify as much of the economy as we can, including transportation. Electrified rail is one means, electric vehicles (EVs) are another. The focus here is mostly on our experience driving EVs. We’ve been driving electric since the fall of 2014.

For those of us who live in the San Joaquin Valley, getting to and from Los Angeles in an Electric Vehicle (EV) is a challenge. Southbound, the last charging stations are in Bakersfield. Then it’s a long 30-mile run across the valley floor before Highway 99 and Interstate 5 make a steep climb over the summit of the Tejon pass.
DC Fast Charging for EVs along California Transportation Corridors

The CEC document CEC-600-2014-002 reveals some locations of the planned DCFCs along I-5 and Highway 99. The US Green Vehicle Council and Cleantech Institute have proposed the build-out of a complete DCFC network along those highways (and also a cross-country route).

Deploying a network of DC fast charging (DCFC) stations along long-distance transportation corridors will enable long-distance EV travel in California. . . This network is also needed to make EVs practical for residents of the Central Valley and rural areas who require frequent long-distance travel.
