News & Articles on Wind Energy

This is an archive of articles and news on both large and small wind turbines, wind energy & the environment, and links to topics on the history of wind energy.

I’ve been working with wind energy since 1976 and my professional experience in the subject runs the gamut from wind resource assessment to installing and testing small wind turbines. I continue to follow the industry and analyze its growth and increasing contribution to renewable electricity generation worldwide.

For newcomers to wind energy I’ve added pages from my previous books explaining terms used in the industry.

  • 200 Term Multilingual Lexicon: The lexicon translates English terms into five different languages: Dansk, Deutsch, Español, Français, and Italiano.
  • Glossary of Wind Energy Terminology: The glossary was written by Paul Gipe and Bill Canter in the late-1990s. I’ve added the glossary to my web site for both its historical content—many of the terms were in use during the 1980s and 1990s—and as a reference for the thousands of newcomers to the wind industry since it was first published.

EWEA: Wind power covers record 61% of Spanish electricity demand

By

On 18 April wind power in Spain reached a new record by producing 317 GW hours of electricity and beating the previous record of 315 GWh recorded on 9 November 2010, according to Red Eléctrica de España (REE). Moveover, during the morning of 19 April, wind power beat previous records by covering 61.06 % of Spain’s electricity demand. . .

Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Plans Large Wind Turbine

By

Paul Gipe

Britian’s principal bird-protection society has announced plans to install a large wind turbine. The move may be unique in the English-speaking world where anti-wind lobbyists have argued that wind turbines are bird-dicing mega-machines and bird lovers oppose the use of wind energy. . .

Guardian: Conservative thinktanks step up attacks against clean energy

By

A confidential strategy memo seen by the Guardian advises using “subversion” to build a national movement of wind farm protesters. The strategy proposal was prepared by a fellow of the American Tradition Institute (ATI) – although the thinktank has formally disavowed the project. The proposal was discussed at a meeting of self-styled ‘wind warriors’ from across the country in Washington DC last February. “These documents show for the first time that local Nimby anti-wind groups are co-ordinating and working with national fossil-fuel funded advocacy groups to wreck the wind industry,” said Gabe Elsner, a co-director of the Checks and Balances, the accountability group which unearthed the proposal and other documents. Among its main recommendations, the proposal calls for a national PR campaign aimed at causing “subversion in message of industry so that it effectively because so bad that no one wants to admit in public they are for it.”. .

Removal of 37 Abandoned Mitsubishi Wind Turbines on Hawaii’s Big Island

By

Paul Gipe

Finally, decades after being abandoned on South Point of Hawaii’s Big Island the 37 Mitsubishi turbines have been removed. Long a source of embarassment in the wind industry and a source for right wing attacks on the viability of wind energy, the derelict turbines have been removed.
