Vehicle Efficiency in International Units and with Feedback

By Paul Gipe

Lots of feedback on my last post: EV Efficiency: Miles per Gallon of Gasoline Equivalent. Friends and colleagues sent me their real world experience with their EVs. Others rightly noted that I have an international audience and only the USA uses MPG or miles per gallon of gasoline—or petrol if you’re in a Commonwealth country.

So be it. Here are a slew of tables converting the various units in use to measure vehicle efficiency.

First up, let’s look at my lifetime experience, the cars I wrote about, and their efficiency. Note that these are real world values, not EPA estimates. For example, the values for the Prius we owned is not the EPA number but what we actually experienced driving 30,000 miles. Always take real values over those done on a test cycle. Despite the EPA’s best efforts, manufacturers can and do play games with mileage or efficiency estimates.

Efficiency During My Driving Lifetime With Real World Numbers

Next, let’s look at the numbers sent in response to my article. Stefan Gsanger drives a Kia Nero EV and Thilo Wirth drives a BYD Dolphin. Both live in Germany. Bill Palmer and Dave Thomas live here in California. Bill Moore writes about EVs in Nebraska. Sjaak Lemmens lives in Australia. He threw in some stats from down under.

Now let’s look at my original table of 2023 EVs here in the USA with columns for liters/100 km and kWh/100 km added.

Efficiency In Miles Per Gallon Equivalent And Liters Per 100 Km

Here is a table converting liters per 100 km to MPG mile per kWh.

Efficiency In L Per 100 Km

Here’s a table converting kWh/100 miles to kWh/100 km.

Efficiency In Kwh Per 100 Km

I’ve also posted the spreadsheet I used to create these tables. While I work in Quattro Pro, I’ve converted the file to Excel. Note that whatever formatting I used is lost in the conversion, but the cells that contain the formulas remain active.
