Christy van der Merwe of South Africa’s Kestrel Wind Turbines says that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) is expected to announce a renewable energy feed-in tariff (Refit) on February 28, 2009.
According to van der Merwe, Nersa member Thembani Bukula told delegates at the recent national Renewable Energy Conference in Sandton.
The proposed tariff is between 0.50 ZAR/kWh ($0.05 USD/kWh) and 0.80 ZAR/kWh ($0.08 USD/kWh) for all electricity generated by wind, small hydro, landfill gas, and concentrating solar.
The Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) has set a target of 10 TWh of electricity from renewable energy by 2013.
Eskom, South Africa’s electric utility, was appointed as the single buyer for the renewable energy generated and is expected to offer 15-year contracts.
