Gary Giddings, creator of an early State of Charge meter for the Nissan Leaf will join the Electric Vehicle Owners of Bakersfield and the Southern San Joaquin Valley at the Golden Corral for brunch 9.30 am, June 20th.
Giddings, a PhD in Electrical Engineering, developed the means to read the Nissan Leaf’s communication system and designed a meter that could measure the State of Charge (SOC) of the Leaf’s traction batteries.
The Nissan Leaf is one of the world’s first mass-produced Electric Vehicles (EVs). An EV driver uses the SOC meter much as a driver in a conventional car uses the gasoline gauge. The meter and the units it uses, GIDs, have been named in Giddings honor by Leaf users.
In 2010, Giddings also was one of the organizers for the first gathering of EV enthusiasts and Leaf owners in the San Diego area. Such gatherings, as the Bakersfield breakfast, have been an important way for EV owners to share experiences and further the technology.
The New York Times featured Giddings in 2011 as one of the engineers who began tinkering with the Nissan Leaf almost as soon as it hit the streets.
Giddings will drive to Bakersfield from Orange County in his new Tesla.
