Lee Vining’s Pioneer Pavilion Small Step for a Big Idea–Solar EV Charging at the Eastern Gateway to Yosemite
By
Paul Gipe
Community activists have raised a solar pavilion in the small town of Lee Vining that they plan to use for charging electric vehicles (EVs). Dubbed the Pioneer Pavilion, the project is part of an ambitious effort by a local Climate Action Group to make the town on the east side of the Sierra Nevada more "climate friendly."

End of an Era in Small Wind–Home Power Magazine and Small Wind Conference Cease
By

Since 2010 the small wind industry in North America has been in steep decline. First Congress turned its back on the industry in the United States. Then the descent accelerated with the rapid fall in the cost of solar energy. Why install a small wind turbine when solar had become so cheap.

Driving the Chevy Bolt EV–Our Impressions
By
Paul Gipe
We leased a Chevy Bolt EV in early November 2017. I've been driving the electric vehicle daily since then. We've also taken it on several round-trip excursions of 300 to 600 miles. I know enough about the car, its pluses as well as its minuses, to now comment knowledgeably on operating it.

Mammoth Lakes electric vehicle advocates have joined together to form the Eastern Sierra chapter of the Electric Auto Association with the hope of spurring the installation of non-Tesla EV charging stations.

California Lags in DC Fast-Charging Station Density for Electric Vehicles
By

Despite its reputation for being electric vehicle (EV) friendly, California lags behind other North American states and provinces in the density of non-Tesla EV fast-charging stations relative to population. California ranks fifth behind Oregon, Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario, but ahead of Washington State. Oregon has 1.7 times more stations relative to its population than the much more populous Golden State.

EV Road Tripping: Bakersfield Bolt to Yosemite via US 395 and the “East Side”
By
Paul Gipe
In mid August we took our annual vacation to Toulumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park. We drove the family car. Nothing special about that per se, we've been doing it for years. What was different was that we drove a Chevy Bolt EV, an electric car. And we drove it up the "East Side" on US 395, one of the nation's most scenic highways.

Prescient Quote about Hometown Wind Energy from 1977!
By

What struck my eye is the quote, "Indiana is a better location for the use of windpower than many eastern states, since most wind speeds are higher, the terrain flatter, and most of the trees cut down."

Off Road in a Chevy Bolt
By

Ok, it wasn't four-wheeling, but it was off-road. Today I took the Bolt off road with the Kern Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. The objective was watering a group of Bakersfield Cactus that we planted about a year ago. The young cacti are drought stressed and needed a shot of water before the winter rains begin.

Peeking Inside the Bolt’s Brain Reveals Valuable Secrets

EV nerds, rejoice. You can see some of the communications between various parts of Chevy's Bolt EV and its central computer--the brain that runs the car.

Bolt EV Successfully Crosses Sierra Nevada Bakersfield to Independence
By
Paul Gipe
Since I've been driving electric I've been itching to drive across the Sierra Nevada to Independence, California from our home in Bakersfield. We love the "East Side" and it's our escape from the heat of a Bakersfield summer.
