There’s continuing confusion about what adapters are necessary for non-Tesla EVs to use Tesla chargers.
Before we get into what adapters non-Tesla drivers need, I should note that most 2026 EVs and onward will use Tesla[i] charging plugs so adapters won’t be needed to use Tesla charge stations.[ii]
Superchargers (DCFC)
For older EVs to use Tesla’s Superchargers, they will need a Tesla to CCS adapter. This adapter is rated to operate up to 1,000 volts and 500 amps. This is a substantial piece of equipment and its cost reflects that.
Level 2 (240 V)
For older EVs to use Tesla destination chargers or home chargers, they will need a Tesla to J1772. These adapters are less substantial because they operate at only 240 volts. They are also less expensive.
To be fully capable of using Tesla equipment, older EVs will need both adapters.
[i] Technically they will be called “NACS” for North American Charging Standard.
[ii] Adapters will be needed for these EVs to use the older CCS charging plugs for DC Fast Charging, and J1772 for Level 2 chargers.
