DC Fast Charging
Instead of mapping out my own charging strategy using various apps on my smartphone, and factoring in a significant buffer in my EV’s state of charge, I let the machine do the planning.
Initially, I feared pulling into an empty lot in my Hyundai Ioniq 5 somewhere just off a lonely stretch of highway, no charger to be seen and no one to blame.
But the route planning software was a terrific co-pilot for me and my family. It directed us to fast-chargers over the 3,400-kilometre journey from Toronto to Nova Scotia and back that required fewer stops than last year. Whereas I might have grown nervous when my battery’s state of charge dipped below 30 per cent, the car’s software was confident with a far slimmer 10 per cent safety buffer.
While it can be scary to try something new, there’s some comfort in knowing you’re not the first person to take a road trip across the U.S. in an EV. In fact, people have been doing it for more than 10 years. If you have any anxiety, just take a deep breath and give yourself some credit for researching this topic in the first place.
We asked EV drivers across the country and our staff for their best tips to compile this comprehensive resource for first-time EV road-trippers and those interested in learning how the experience differs from gasoline-powered cars.
Each site will offer three types of chargers for different commercial and passenger vehicles. The station in the southern Central Valley, for example, will have 90 240-kilowatt chargers — half for passenger vehicles and the rest for commercial cars. It will also have nine MCS 1,200-kilowatt chargers for commercial freights.
